At least 250 ostriches died of heat exposure in temperatures of more then 50 degrees Celsius in Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo.
Head Veterinarian and manager of research and development at the Klein Karoo International Farms Dr Adriaan Olivier said that "100 birds had died on one farm and other farms had suffered losses of between 30 and 70 birds" Adriaan Oliver also added "that ostriches were not able to cool down as the temperatures of the air was warmer then their body temperature of 38 degrees Celsius".
CEO of the SA Ostrich Chamber of Commerce Anton Kruger said that "its was usually birds between the ages of four and five months old an that ostriches of this age costs about R2300 per bird".
No insurance on ostriches that died from heat exposure.
